Hi, my colleague told me that I shouldn't join a union because my boss won't like it and might pick on me. I don't know what to do.

Hi Suse,
Sometimes employers are not so happy with a union coming into the company. Though in New Zealand it is a legal right for someone to join a union, and if a boss or TL does this they can get in big trouble and even up to a 20 000 dollar fine!
If the union is around, talk to them about your concerns. Better yet if other friends and co-workers are in the union is will be harder for management to intimate and discourage people who are involved.

Companies don't like unions because it means there workers have more of a say in how things are run. In some ways I think conpanies try to bribe people not to join with free food and all the parties and small perks at work but at the end of the day our pay is low and we have little job security
